Storytime

Youth Services offers preschool storytime on weekday mornings at most locations. Sessions are usually 8 weeks long, but you can attend one storytime without attending the whole session.  Sign up through the event calendar (link opens in a new tab)!

Skills

Storytime is a great way to introduce skills that children will use when they learn to read. We emphasize these early literacy skills at our storytime programs:

  • Print awareness
  • Phonological awareness
  • Letter recognition
  • Vocabulary
  • Storytelling
  • Love of books and reading!

Books

We read books that use rhythm and rhyme, descriptive language, helpful illustrations, and concepts like colors, numbers, and letters.  Here are some of our favorites:

Tips

Here are some tips for getting the most out of storytime:

  • Sing along with songs and rhymes
  • Model listening behavior during the story
  • Feel free to leave and come back if your child isn't participating the way you hoped!
  • Save snacks for later (food is not allowed in the library)
