Biometrics are measurements related to a person’s unique physical characteristics, including but not limited to fingerprints, palmprints, voiceprints, facial recognition, retinal, or iris measurements. The collection of biometric data is inherently inconsistent with the Library Bill of Rights and the Library’s commitment to patron privacy, confidentiality, and intellectual freedom.
The Library Bill of Rights states, “All people, regardless of origin, age, background, or views, possess a right to privacy and confidentiality in their library use. Libraries should advocate for, educate about, and protect people’s privacy, safeguarding all library use data, including personally identifiable information.”
The implementation of any biometric data collection tools not only affects library users but it also impairs the privacy of Cranston Public Library employees through compelled consent to the submission and use of their biometric data.
The Library will not install any biometric data collection systems to be used inside the library buildings or outside on library grounds due to the potential harm on patron and library worker privacy.
